Government Will Not Bow to Pressure: Prime Minister Mwigulu Defends Reform Agenda Amid Rising Opposition Voices”

In a firm and resolute tone, Mwigulu Nchemba has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to implementing transformative reforms, stating that resistance from certain groups is both expected and, in many cases, driven by personal interests that are being challenged by ongoing changes.

Speaking today in Dodoma after inspecting the progress of key road infrastructure projects, the Prime Minister emphasized that the Government will not be distracted or weakened by criticism, especially when such opposition stems from individuals who previously benefited from unlawful or unethical practices.

The projects inspected included the construction of the Ntyuka–Mvumi–Kikombo road, which spans 76 kilometers and is being upgraded to a tarmac standard, as well as a 5-kilometer stretch of the Chololo–Mapinduzi road leading to the headquarters of the Tanzania People's Defence Force (TPDF). These projects form part of the Government’s broader strategy to enhance infrastructure, facilitate economic growth, and improve connectivity across regions.

    Resistance Rooted in Self-Interest
Dr. Nchemba noted that it is not unusual for some individuals to oppose government initiatives, particularly when those initiatives threaten their personal gains.

“It is completely normal for certain people to resist government decisions, especially when those decisions interfere with their individual interests particularly those who were benefiting through illegitimate means,” he stated.

According to the Prime Minister, such resistance is often not spontaneous but organized. He alleged that some affected individuals go as far as hiring others to criticize the Government and its leaders through social media platforms and other public forums.

“These individuals are not acting on their own. They are being sponsored and influenced from where they are. In order to protect their contracts and maintain their benefits, they must continue attacking the Government,” he added.

His remarks highlight a growing concern within leadership circles about the role of coordinated narratives aimed at undermining public confidence in government initiatives.
    A Pattern Across Administrations

Dr. Nchemba was quick to point out that the current situation is not unique to the present administration. He explained that similar patterns of opposition have been observed in previous governments, where leaders who took bold steps to address systemic issues often faced backlash.

“This is not something new. Even in past administrations, there were individuals who used harsh language and launched attacks against leaders who stood firm in making tough decisions,” he explained.

By drawing parallels with previous administrations, the Prime Minister sought to place current criticism within a broader historical context one that reflects the inevitable tensions that accompany reform-driven leadership.

    Personal Experience with Criticism
The Prime Minister also shared his own experiences as a target of criticism, noting that he has personally faced sustained attacks for his role in implementing government policies.
He likened the situation to a moral or ideological struggle, suggesting that those who stand against wrongdoing often encounter significant resistance.

“In many ways, this is like a battle of principles. When you choose to stand against injustice or wrongdoing, you should expect opposition,” he said.
This analogy underscores the moral framing that the Government is increasingly using to describe its reform agenda—positioning its actions as part of a broader effort to promote accountability, fairness, and national development.
    Call for Public Support

In his address, Dr. Nchemba urged Tanzanians to remain steadfast and not be swayed by negative narratives or misinformation.
“Citizens should not be intimidated or misled by these voices. The Government is working for the benefit of all Tanzanians, and these reforms are necessary for our collective progress,” he emphasized.

He also called on the public to continue supporting President Samia Suluhu Hassan, highlighting her leadership as central to the success of the country’s development agenda.
“The President has shown strong commitment to safeguarding national resources and ensuring that they benefit every citizen. It is our responsibility as Tanzanians to support her efforts,” he said.

Infrastructure as a Pillar of Development
The Prime Minister’s visit to inspect road construction projects was not merely ceremonialit served as a tangible demonstration of the Government’s development priorities.

Infrastructure development, particularly in the transport sector, remains a key pillar of Tanzania’s economic strategy. Improved road networks are expected to enhance trade, reduce transportation costs, and connect rural communities to markets and essential services.
The Ntyuka–Mvumi–Kikombo road, once completed, will significantly improve accessibility within the region, facilitating the movement of goods and people. Similarly, the Chololo–Mapinduzi road will enhance access to critical national institutions, including the TPDF headquarters.

“These projects are clear evidence of the Government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and boosting economic growth,” Dr. Nchemba noted.
    Protecting National Resources

Another key theme in the Prime Minister’s speech was the protection of national resources. He reiterated that the Government is determined to ensure that the country’s wealth is used for the benefit of all citizens, rather than a select few.

“Our focus is on protecting national resources and ensuring they contribute to the development of our country. This requires tough decisions, and not everyone will be happy with those decisions,” he said.

This stance aligns with broader efforts by the Government to enhance transparency, strengthen institutions, and combat corruption efforts that have, in some cases, disrupted entrenched interests.
The Role of Leadership in Times of Change
Dr. Nchemba’s remarks also shed light on the challenges of leadership in times of transformation. Implementing reforms often requires confronting powerful interests and making decisions that may not be immediately popular.

However, the Prime Minister emphasized that true leadership involves prioritizing long-term national interests over short-term convenience.
“Leadership is about making the right decisions for the country, even when those decisions are difficult or unpopular,” he said.

This perspective reflects a broader philosophy within the current administration one that emphasizes resilience, accountability, and a forward-looking approach to governance.
    Encouraging Unity and Confidence

As he concluded his remarks, the Prime Minister called for unity among Tanzanians, urging citizens to remain confident in the direction the country is taking.
“We must move forward together as a nation. Let us not be divided by those who seek to protect their own interests at the expense of the country,” he said.

He reiterated that the Government’s development agenda is designed to create opportunities, improve living standards, and build a more inclusive economy.

    A Clear Message Moving Forward
The Prime Minister’s message was clear: the Government will continue to pursue its reform agenda with determination, regardless of opposition from vested interests.
By addressing both the challenges and achievements of the current administration, Dr. Nchemba sought to reassure the public that the Government remains focused on delivering tangible results.

From infrastructure development to resource management, the initiatives highlighted during his visit to Dodoma serve as a testament to the administration’s commitment to progress.
As Tanzania continues on its development path, the balance between reform and resistance will likely remain a defining feature of the political landscape. However, as emphasized by the Prime Minister, the ultimate goal remains unchanged building a nation that works for all its people.
