Vice President’s Office Netball Team Set to Ignite May Day Games 2026 with Opening Clash Against Ministry of Water

The Netball Team of the Vice President’s Office is expected to officially open the curtain for the 2026 May Day Games with an exciting opening fixture against the Ministry of Water on April 16, 2026, in Njombe Region. The highly anticipated encounter is scheduled to take place at Mji Mwema Grounds and will serve as one of the key opening attractions ahead of this year’s national Workers’ Day celebrations.

According to the official fixture schedule released on April 15, 2026, by the National May Day Games Competition Committee, the match marks the beginning of a series of sporting activities organized as part of the celebrations of International Workers’ Day, commonly known as May Day. This year’s national commemorations are being hosted in Njombe Region, where workers from different institutions across the country have gathered to celebrate labour achievements, unity, productivity, and national development.

The participation of the Vice President’s Office in the netball category has generated considerable interest, especially because it marks the first time the institution is fielding a netball team in the prestigious annual workers’ tournament. Sports enthusiasts and supporters of government institutions are eager to witness how the team performs on such a significant stage.

Speaking ahead of the opening fixture, Secretary of the Sports Club of the Vice President’s Office, Mr. Marwa Nyaisawa, said the team has prepared thoroughly and is fully determined to offer strong competition against every opponent they will face during the tournament.

“We understand that this is our first time participating in these games through the netball team, but considering the level of preparation we have undertaken, we are optimistic that we will compete strongly against all teams from the group stages and beyond,” said Nyaisawa.
His statement reflects the growing confidence within the camp, where players and officials believe their hard work during preparations will translate into positive performances on the court. Despite being newcomers in the competition, the team has approached the tournament with seriousness and ambition.

Nyaisawa further explained that the team recognizes the difficulty of competing in the May Day Games, noting that every participating institution has invested significant effort in preparing their squads. However, he emphasized that the technical bench of the Vice President’s Office has successfully instilled morale, discipline, and confidence among the players.

“We know these games are not easy because every team comes prepared and determined to win. However, our technical bench has worked hard to build confidence in the players, and everyone is mentally ready for the challenge ahead,” he added.

The official tournament draw placed the Vice President’s Office Netball Team in Group H, where they will face strong competition from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation as well as the Office of the Regional Commissioner of Dodoma. The grouping presents both a challenge and an opportunity for the team to prove its quality against experienced opponents.

Their campaign begins with the opening match against the Ministry of Water on April 16, before returning to action on April 17 against the Office of the Regional Commissioner of Dodoma. The team will then conclude the group stage with a decisive match against the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation on April 18, 2026.

With such a compact schedule, consistency, physical fitness, and tactical discipline will be essential for success. Playing three important matches in three consecutive days demands not only technical quality but also mental resilience and squad depth.

For the Vice President’s Office, this tournament is more than just a competition for medals. It is also an opportunity to promote teamwork, wellness, and employee engagement through sport. Across Tanzania, the May Day Games have become a powerful platform that encourages institutions to invest in health and recreation for workers, while strengthening social bonds among employees.

The significance of sports within workplaces has continued to grow in recent years. Institutions increasingly recognize that healthy employees are often more productive, motivated, and collaborative. Sporting competitions such as the May Day Games create space for workers to interact beyond office settings, helping to build unity and improve morale.

Meanwhile, Head Coach of the Vice President’s Office Netball Team, Mr. Mafuru Buriro, also expressed confidence in the squad’s readiness, insisting that his players are eager to showcase their abilities during the tournament.

All players are ready, and we continue to improve day by day. The technical bench is working on the small weaknesses we identify during training sessions, and we are determined to show something different to our opponents in these games,” said Buriro.
His remarks indicate a coaching staff focused on continuous improvement rather than complacency. Even at the final stages before the competition, the team has maintained intensity in training while fine-tuning tactical details and correcting minor errors observed during practice sessions.

Buriro also noted that the May Day Games will provide an important platform for building a stronger squad that can compete in future national netball tournaments. This suggests the institution is not viewing the tournament as a one-time appearance, but as part of a broader long-term strategy to establish itself in competitive netball.

Such a vision is likely to benefit the players, many of whom now have a chance to gain valuable experience in a high-level competitive environment. Exposure to tournament pressure, varied opponents, and structured competition can help players grow technically and mentally.

Netball continues to gain popularity across Tanzania, particularly within schools, institutions, and women’s sports programs. Competitions like the May Day Games play an important role in expanding the game’s reach while creating opportunities for talent development. The involvement of more government offices and ministries also raises the standard of the sport through increased participation.

As the opening day approaches, excitement is building in Njombe, where teams from across the nation have gathered not only for competition but also for celebration. The atmosphere is expected to be vibrant, combining sporting entertainment with the spirit of workers’ solidarity.

The Mji Mwema Grounds are expected to host an energetic crowd for the curtain-raiser between the Vice President’s Office and the Ministry of Water. Opening matches often carry special pressure and excitement, as they set the tone for the tournament and attract attention from officials, supporters, and participants alike.

For the Ministry of Water, the fixture presents a chance to begin their campaign strongly against a debuting side. For the Vice President’s Office, however, it is an opportunity to announce their arrival and make an immediate statement in the competition.

Much will depend on how quickly the players settle into the game, manage nerves, and execute their strategy. Opening fixtures can be unpredictable, particularly when one side is making its debut. Yet such occasions also create opportunities for surprise performances.
The 2026 May Day Games are being held under the theme:

Sports for Health, Employment, Happiness and Work Continues; Decent Work is a Strong Pillar for Sustainable Development in the Implementation of Vision 2050.”
This year’s slogan highlights the close relationship between sports, economic productivity, employee wellbeing, and national progress. It also emphasizes the importance of decent work as Tanzania advances toward the goals outlined in Vision 2050.

The message reflects how sport can contribute beyond recreation. It promotes health, encourages discipline, creates social harmony, and can even generate employment opportunities in coaching, administration, fitness, media, and event organization.

For participants, the May Day Games are therefore more than a sporting event they symbolize the unity of the workforce and the role of healthy living in national development. For institutions, they provide a chance to strengthen identity, morale, and public engagement.

The Vice President’s Office enters the competition carrying hope, determination, and the ambition to make a memorable debut. Their officials have spoken confidently, their coach believes in the squad, and the players appear ready to embrace the challenge.

Should they perform well, the team could emerge as one of the surprise packages of the tournament. Even beyond results, their participation itself sends a positive message about the value of sports within public institutions.

All eyes will now turn to April 16, when the whistle blows at Mji Mwema Grounds in Njombe and the Vice President’s Office begins its first-ever May Day netball journey against the Ministry of Water.

Whether it ends in victory or a hard-fought lesson, one thing is certain: the 2026 May Day Games are set to begin in style.
